NDFMGA Board of Directors 2018-20 Souteast Representative - NDFMGA President

Ross Lockhart

PO Box 191
Grandin, ND

Ross and his wife, Amber, own and operate Heart and Soil Farm based in Gardner, ND.  Although Amber and Ross started their small-scale vegetable farm in 2013, Ross’s passion for agriculture developed early in life as he took every opportunity to help out on his family farm growing up.  Nevertheless, Ross left the farm for some years after graduating from college to pursue career opportunities on the west coast. In addition to being exposed to a host of new ideas related to “local” food and sustainable agriculture during his time in California, Ross eventually discovered that his heart was still back on the family farm in North Dakota.  When Ross, Amber, and Stella (daughter) moved back to ND in 2012, they decided to get their hands dirty and help support the blossoming local food movement in ND.  They sell their produce through several different market channels, including the Red River Market in Fargo, a CSA, and a few wholesale venues.

This is a family operation being a member of BisMarket farmer's market in Bismarck.  We call ourselves Farm Fresh Gardens.

We began in 1992 with the intention of getting the children involved in agriculture from sowing to marketing.  Now that the children have left home the operation is continuing with the children being involved as they can.  Even if they cannot be involved in the operation they still patronize their local farmer's market.

Our primary crops are pumpkins, summer and winter squash, shelling and snap peas, beets, carrots and potatoes.  Minor crops include tomatoes, peppers, pickling cucumbers, dill and green beans.

I believe that the North Dakota Farmers Market and Growers Association provides opportunities for education in order to be successful as a grower and marketer of specialty crops in North Dakota.

My name is Joe Sutherland, I'm a married father of 8 and a 45 year old hobby farmer. We have a 70 acre farm in Dawson, Kidder County, where we raise a small beef cattle herd, chickens and milk goats. My family is a member of the NDFMGA, as well as state licensed egg and feed dealers. We have a small roadside stand in which we sell our cottage food goods. Will use to attend the Bismarck Capital Farmers market but began making enough of our own products to have the on farm store.  We are currently waiting on the state inspection for additional food retailers license.  We do our best to raise our livestock and garden organically, with as little pesticides is possible. Sometimes the life we choose is harder than it has to be, but in the long run is better than it would be otherwise. Our goal is to one day be able to make enough income solely off of the farm without having to work a "regular" job.

After a 22-year career as an English Instructor in Rolla, ND, Danielle Mickelson left teaching to pursue a love for growing vegetables and processing family recipes into pickles, sauces, relishes, jams and jellies.  Her family began selling at the Rolla Farmers Market in 2015 as a way to share and sell the bounty of their garden, and it quickly became the passion of Danielle and her daughter Rachael.  Each year, Mickelson Tiny Plants expands both in size and offerings to their customers.  In 2018 the garden will be larger than an acre and include a large variety of fruits and vegetables that are started in their own home.  Danielle was taught to grow, can, cook and bake by her parents and grandparents and is honored that her daughter is becoming the driving force in keeping the traditions alive and sharing them with their community. They can be found every Wednesday and Saturday morning, July through October, in Centennial Park in Rolla, ready to share vegetables, fruits, canned goods, and sourdough breads.
